In recent years, the total number of earthquakes per year almost doubled between 1990
and 2005 from 16,612 to 30,458. The total number of earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 to 3.9 almost
quadrupled between 1990 and 2005 from 2,457 to 9,514 (see table 20-3).
